Sofia, February 23rd 2011 – The Mayor of Bansko, Alexander Kravarov, admitted to “Dnevnik” daily that the ski runs in Pirin National Park are built up without the needed and obligatory construction permits. According to him the Municipality of Bansko has only granted a permit for the ski equipments and buildings in Bansko Ski Zone.

Sofia, 25 February 2011 – Taking advantage of the hubbub around the start of the world ski cup, the municipal councils of Bansko and Razlog have pronounced themselves in favor of the destruction of centuries-old forests and unique landscapes in National Park Pirin, warn from the NGO coalition “For the Nature”.
The two municipal councils want to implement “regional projects for year-round tourism”. Behind this nice-sounding heading is hidden their desire to change the management plan of National Park Pirin with the purpose of increasing 8 times the territory of the ski-runs, 4 times the number of ski lifts, developing two new ski resorts above Razlog and Dobrinishte, and expanding twice the area of the ski resort above Bansko.

Two decisions of the Ministry of Environment and Waters (MEW) breach an international convention and place the National Park on the list of World Heritage in Danger
Unique forests of white firs and centuries-old dwarf pines will be cut down in order to build two new lifts in National Park Pirin. Two decisions of the MEW permit the construction of the two new lifts without carrying out environmental impact assessments and assessments for compatibility with NATURA 2000. According to the concessionaire’s plans deposited at the MEW, the bottom and upper stations of one of the new lifts will be built outside of the concession territory.

24 August 2010: Environmentalists have called on the EU to take action against widespread destruction of protected natural habitats in Bulgaria caused by the construction of tourist resorts, golf courses and ski slopes, sand and gravel extraction and intensive wood production. Without action, they warn, the situation could be repeated in Romania and future EU member states.
