Famous artists get involved in the campaign 'Bulgaria - GMO-free country!'

This Sunday, February 28, 2010, a big meeting-concert was held in front of the cathedral "Alexander Nevski" under the slogan:

„GMO-free Bulgaria! Let's keep our land clean and protect the health of our children!"

This was the latest in the long row of initiatives organized by parents and supported by farmers, grain-producers, bee-keepers, organic farmers, scientists and nature-protection organizations.

The protest is directed at the changes in the Law on genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) which would allow the release and breeding of GMOs in Bulgaria's environment.

We insist that:
- the Bulgarian authorities fulfill the recommendations of the European Commission and work out and present to the Bulgarian society a National Strategy for development of state policy and priorities that would establish Bulgaria as a GMO-free country;
- a working group with broad citizen's participation be immediately created in order to work out such a document.

The initiative is entirely inspired by citizens and is a proof that the Bulgarian citizens stand up for their right to life and livelihood in their country and for their right to provide a future for their children in it.

At the meeting people could try homegrown Bulgarian produce: honey, herbs, vegetables, bread and sweets produced with the methods of conventional or organic farming.

Well-known Bulgarian writers, painters, actors, sports people, physicians and scientists took active part in the concert and expressed their support for the cause.

The concert featured performances by Elitsa Todorova and Stundzhi, Kamelia Todorova, Kotseto-Kalki, Tedi Katsarova, Polly Genova, Hristo Karaslavov, Martin Kostadinov, women's folk choir "Elitsa", children's choir "Bon-Bon", vocal studio "Dstars" and others. All musicians took part pro bono in support of the cause.
