Strandja Nature Park 15 years old

Strandja Nature Park – the largest protected area in the country was celebrated by organizing an extreme winter hike. The hike was joined by 14 enthusiasts from the towns of Burgas, Sliven, Kotel, Veliko Tirnovo and Bulgarevo, as well as employees form the Nature Park Directorate. The group’s leader was the park’s Director Stefan Zlatarov. The walk lasted over 6 hours in extremely hard conditions and temperatures down to minus 15 degrees.
The great attraction for the participants was the crossing over the high-water Mechi Dol river by the means of a “trolley” speleo device The event was organized by the newly founded “Agalina” Eco Society - Burgas, in partnership with Strandja Nature Park Directorate.
Strandja Nature Park was declared as such on 24 January 1995. It was namely in Strandja that the oldest nature reserve in Bulgaria, “Silkossia”, was created in 1931. At their meeting in the Swiss city of Luzerne the European environment ministers declared Strandja one of the five priority conservation areas in Central and Eastern Europe.
