By the term biodiversity /biological diversity/ we mean all life forms on Earth.
The natural ecosystems secure our existence by providing us with food, wood, clean water, flood protection, processing nutrients, oxygen and drugs. Also
they grant us rest and many, many other goods. In fact, we're used to taking these goods for granted to such an extent that we'll be able to value their
importance when we lose them. However - according to scientific evidence - two thirds of these "goods" are in process of decreasing. The damage on the
biodiversity is a serious threat to the whole planet, with significance equal to this of the climate changes, because when a biological specie disappears,
it is forever.
Yes, for certain there may be an evanescent benefit from trees cutdown or cementing marshlands. But the striving for an evanescent benefit pays no attention
to the future matters. When a builder beholds a protected area, he considers it nothing but a "wasted land", he does not take notice of the eminent economic benefits,
which are result of the natural, hale and strong ecosystems.
The economic value of the biodiversity becomes more and more important to people. Many active businesses invest in the protection of biodiversity, because
people realize that their earnings strictly depend on the healthy functioning ecosystems. Examples for such investors are farmers, food industries,
wood-processing, paper and pharmaceutical companies, also a big part of the tourism sector.
The recovery of ecosystems' integrity can have a great achievement to soften the consequences from disasters such as floods, droughts and hurricanes.
Why is the biodiversity so important?
